I Just Got Veneers. How Do I Take Care of Them?

I Just Got Veneers. How Do I Take Care of Them?

You've decided to address some of the cosmetic issues that were bothering you and enhance your smile with the help of dental veneers.

That's great! Dental veneers are a great cosmetic treatment that can help you correct a wide range of issues, such as chips, gaps, uneven teeth, or teeth discoloration.

But, now that you have a new and gorgeous smile, you may wonder how you can make it last for as long as possible.

Here's how to take care of your veneers to prolong their lifespan.

Aftercare Tips

After the dentist places your veneers, they will offer you some at-home tips and instructions to take proper care of your new smile. These tips can include:

  • Avoiding foods and beverages that stain or are too acidic. If you don't want to give up your morning coffee, use a straw and clean your teeth afterward.
  • Avoiding or limiting the consumption of foods that can stain your teeth or are acidic, such as tomato sauces, berries, or curries.
  • Avoiding hard and sticky foods, as well as sugary foods such as candy. These foods can damage your veneers or cause cavities.
  • Do not use your teeth as tools or bite your nails as you can increase the risk of damaging your veneers.
  • Use a nightguard if you clench and grind your teeth.

Can I Brush and Floss My Teeth?

While minding your diet and habits can help prolong the lifespan of your veneers, it can only do so much. Proper oral hygiene is the most important thing you can do to take care of your veneers and make them last for as long as possible.

The problem is that a lot of people assume that because veneers are made of synthetic materials, they don't really need to be brushed since they can't get cavities. And, that's true to some extent: your veneers can't get decayed, but the tooth underneath can.

So make sure to brush your veneers twice a day using a soft-bristled toothbrush and a non-abrasive toothpaste.

Do I Still Need to Come in for Professional Hygiene Appointments?

Yes. During a professional hygiene appointment, the dentist will not only clean your teeth and the veneers, removing surface stains, but will also check your oral health to make sure everything is in order.
